To me, there's nothing wrong with expecting some skills from artists that have taken on vocal duties for 20 years, no matter how great their music is. To me, it's become such an irritating thing that i quietly wish that their next musical venture will be an instrumental one. I mean….they sound KILLER on albums, and so it's such a let down to go to a live show, and getting served sourball after sourball throughout the show.
Don't get me wrong….I love the band to death! I just hope that they focus abit more on the vocals for live shows in the future. Or stop setting the bar way too high for themselves on albums, and then bomb on stage…
PS: Their music isn't that much more demanding now then before if you think about it.
It's your choice to hate Geddy Lees vocals. But the point still stands. He really captures the flow and feel of his vocals on albums when playing live.
Quote:that townsend/artist line can very much be brought into the MP-vocal debate. entertainers hit the right notes but artists focus on expressing themselves. [](yes i'm aware of the thousand examples that defy this simple statement but it's still a worthy thought
Horsecrap imo! Just look at Geddy Lee of Rush; Playing intricate basslines, keyboards, pedals ++ live , but he still manages to sing way better then our guys do. And if he's not an artist, then who is?
The bottom line is that one after 20+ years should be able to expect a better vocal preformance then what's being delivered these days. And the almost mind boggling thing about it all is that they actually sang way better in the past. What gives??!
You're right. When the sour notes hit, they really hit on this recording. But I agree on the Snah Vocals. He does a pretty good job. Perhaps that's why he's given more and more of the vocal duties. But Bent also can sing great if he really wants to. My bet is that he (they) just need a few more shows to really get into the material.
Ok so i sort of started this debate yesterday. And then and there i ment it, judging what i'd heard of the recording on my sound system. But after giving it another go on my headphones last night, i must say that perhaps i was a little harsh on the boys. There are certainly sour moments (Mutiny was quite appalling for one). But Snah actually sings quite good throughout the concert, saving it from total vocal failure. So it seems like he's really trying. Bent on the other hand sound uninspired at times. Shape up Bent!
Also, perhaps it's true what's been said earlier….that they're aware of their limitations regarding vocals, and just don't give a sh*t about that, and just focus on rocking out instead. Kind of sad if it's so. But if i had to choose between great vocals and monsterous musical technical skills, it'll always be the skills. It's just a dream of mine to have both. Just once
…and to focus further on the positive things about this gig; It sounds great musically. I really like their live rendition of the Unicorn, and can't wait to see them in London.
Oh yeah….Thanks a million Hovmod! Really Great Boot!!
Gawd! Such a nice recording close to ruined by horrendous vocals. I really hope they'll get it together throughout the tour, cus that was BAD imo! Musically it sounded great tho.
Junior!
Watersound
Well that's the beauty of our beloved band. You never know what you're gonna get next. Sure, they've made heaps of wonderful short pop/rock songs. But all the way back to the Demon Box era you could see their sense of adventure, trying new things (the introduction of Deathprod, the long drony songs like the wheel and TGC, the tussler album, acoustic ditties like thuesday morning and feel, popish songs like junior and now it's tome to skate). They've done it all. And all in the spirit of MP (you can't argue that they've kept their sound all the way through even though their music has changed).
And now, since the introduction of KK, they've added some prog elements into their music. Big deal! They still sound great, the energy is there aswell as their song craft. It's just the next level in a pretty impressive evolution, but at the same time with a signature sound. No other band sound like MP no matter what they do, and never will. And that's the bottom line if you ask me.
Becides….it's always been a big thing with Bent not to grow stale in a specific genre. Like mentioned in the recent dagbladet interview –
"- Det er farlig med rutiner i musikk. Det blir fort stivt og døvt. Jeg synes det er bra vi fortsatt kan være et alternativ etter tjue år i bransjen"
Roughly translated to "It's dangerous with routine within music. It can easily get stiff and "dumb". I think it's good that we can still be an alternative after 20 years in the business"
This is one of many statements bent has made about not becoming stale. They've always been adventurous and keen on trying new things. So their new found love for long and proggy songs isn't that strange. And so, with such an impressive effort like TDDU (imo), i say; Let them have their fun. Let them muck around with some fiddle and sax. Cus in the end, it's all good. If i were you, i'd stop dissing on the small things, and start seeing the album as a whole. Quite impressive if you ask me.
And who knows…..the next album could easily be a return to shorter songs.
Also, after such a hurdle race (to quote snah) like BH/BC was, it's not that hard to understand their need to stretch things out abit, and jam
nils1: Not exactly. MP has added one more loop to the riff (at the end before it starts again), but it's way to similar to be a coincidence.
Non serviam! – this is plagiarism!
No matter tho. The song itself is such a great one, so all is forgiven.
It's beginning to sound like bliss Really loving it!
THere you go again! Do you even know what jazz is?
Cuz the unicorn isn't jazz!
Just one thing mr. nelson; Why do you keep referring to MP as becoming a jazz band? Sure there are some references to jazz in their music here and there, but there are more then equal amounts of hard hitting rock, pop, avant-garde, prog etc aswell. Personally i think a little touch of jazz now and then only broadens the musical experience. But to say that it's become a jazz act is slightly silly if you ask me…
The melody line to the hollow lands/into the mystic is stuck well in my head… I keep repeating the phrase; "told me a cabin boy i'd be, sold me the slops, shipped me to sea
made a sailor out of me"
Great album! Just so great!!!
Quote:All that mp had of glory has vanished: no more beautiful pop ballads…no magnificent build up droning songs – like golden core and vortex surfer…no riffy jamming…Earlier the use of noise in the music had a function…now it´s just annoying spice to nonsense music…
Well. That proves it then. You're not a fan! Cus the new album is packed with exactly that! Beautiful ballads, Magnificent build up droning songs, riffy jamming, and functional noise. Plus the sound of a band that has evolved since 94-98 thank god.
Damn…..nearly sold out already!!
