Notes: Motorpsycho's second concert in Barcelona after debuting in the city on 18.04.2002. This concert was originally scheduled for Rocksound but was moved to a new location on the day of the show due to technical problems. While the new venue is a "megataverna" aimed for a tourist crowd the band plays in a small cellar with an okay sound. There are some travelling psychonauts from Holland, Italy and Norway in the crowd. There was no backstage so the band is hanging out in the concert room before and after the show. They change the actual setlist: The encores "Nothing To Say " and "Mountain" are being played at the end of the main set and they omit "All is loneliness". The actual encores "You lied" and "Black to comm" are not on the setlist. This show rocks like hell!

Apparently tonight's concert in Barcelona has been moved to a new venue due to technical problems. The concert will now take place at La Ovella Negra (Zamora, 78, esquina Pallars).

Of course, Ratmaus! Now that is an intreguing thought! They never did a stand-alone version of "The other one", only inside "My best friend" and "Cornucopia". Btw, the Dead have a song called "High time" too and with "Go To California" as next song… hmmm…?
Found myself browsing the extensive UnOff archive (like so many times) and found an interview from 2002 during which the interviewer Scott Heller (SH) discusses "Motortrades" with the band. Thought I quote it here, some cool stuff:
SH: Have you heard of this group on the internet called Motortraders? It is a very exclusive group that you have to be invited to join of people trade nearly exclusively MP recordings.
Geb: Ok… cool.
SH: There are 45 members and it is run by some Norwegian guys, two of which will record every night of this except tonight. It is easier to take the ferry to Hamburg then to come here first. But… they are very dedicated…
Bent: That's good!
Geb: We might know them if it is Anders and…
SH: Yes.
Bent: Great people. I think it is fun. We have been playing along with this whole Grateful dead thingy all the time anyway. It is free music. Go and get it… as long as you don't steal it. To see that people pick up on it and see that it is worth it to tag along on a whole tour and record the whole thing, is a tip of the hat to us. It means that we are doing something that is valuable. That is a good feeling for us, that people care that much, is mind blowing.
SH: I totally agree. I think it is a tribute and an honor for any band. I think it's quite rare that a band can pull together an interesting and diverse selection of music that differs enough that people will follow them. I would guess there are 20 or 30 bands in the world that do that.
Geb: Yeah. Thats right. Are you one of these Motortraders?
SH: Yes, I am… For example, for the last tour, I have one of the nights from Trondheim, Rome, Copenhagen, Halden, Kristiansand, Biel. And they are very interesting to hear all the differences.
Geb: Kristiansand, that is with horns, right…

Notes: The first concert of Motorpsycho's second tour in Spain after the band had first toured the country in 2002. A concert was booked for Bilbao in 2002 too but the show was canceled the day of the show due to poor ticket sales so this is Motorpsycho's first appearance in this relaxed city. Azkena is a small bar with a small stage and a famillial vibe. The audience is relaxed and the band plays a "trance rock" set. There is no encore due to a curfew at the venue. The inclusion of "Hallucifuge" is unconfirmed, a sms-report says "Hallucifuge (? Bent)" and the setlist states an unknown number in this slot. "Go To California" was the last time played in Trondheim 19.12.2008 (late show).

This is the latest installment in Motorpsycho's ongoing series of live documents "Roadwork". It was recorded across Europe over a three-year period spanning 2008-2010, and is the first live record released featuring the Snah/Bent/Kenneth line-up of the band. As finding a complete show fit for release proved difficult, and modern technology makes it real easy to fake a chronology that would work well from a listeners point of view, "Roadwork vol 4: Intrepid Skronk" is a collection of moments from the last several tours Motorpsycho's undertaken since Kenneth Kapstad joined on drums in 2007, and features material from all phases of their career.
The previous installment in this series, "vol 3: the four norsemen of the apocalypse" – released as part of the “Haircuts†DVD in 2007, was a recording of the Snah/Bent/Geb/Baard line-up of the band recorded at the Paradiso in Amsterdam in 2003. It documented a band disintegrating from ceaseless touring and ever increasing differences of ambition: flaming out, but still bravly trying to – and in parts actually managing to – connect with the muse. Let's just say the tension is tangible.
This is a different cup of tea. This is a living, breathing muscle-car of a rock band in full flight, stretching the limits of their imaginations (and sometimes the patience of their audience!) by going some place new as often as possible – creating a new collective identity for themselves and the reimagening the material in the process.
The focus of the two volumes – and the series as a whole – is the same though: the improvising rock band. The versions of the songs contained herein all have one thing in common: they are all really different from the studio incarnations of themselves. “All is Lonelinessâ€Â, an acoustic five minute hymn in its original state on “Demon Box†(1993), is here an eighteen minute electric behemoth sloutching towards …eh, Haarlem (?) to be born anew. The somewhat stilted orchestral psych version of “Landslide†from the 2002 “Phanerothyme†album, has become something altogether more organic and jazzy here, and “Arnie Hassleâ€Â's kozmic kayaking escapades from last years' “Heavy Metal Fruit†had grown into epic proportions by the time it hit Leipzig last summer. It's this kind of reinvention that is the focus of everything going on here, and although the adrenalin wins out in places and the kinetic energy the boys amass sometimes becomes almost too much for them to handle, the power trios' antics makes for an exciting listen. Riding the tiger indeed, the band sometimes tethers on the brink of fusion, jazzrock, and other 'unentartete' forms, but mostly manages to rein in the beast on the right side of taste. Mostly.
“Intrepid Skronk†is therefore an apt description of this music, and if that doesn't scare you off and you keep your ears open, you might discover something in these grooves that you never thought a rock record would provide.
Oh, and the Dutch are just great most of the time!

Fifteen years ago on this day Motorpsycho played the Schlachthof in Bremen (GER) for the first time! This club is considered by many travelling psychonauts to be (one of) the best concert venues to see the band at! After debuting at Wehrschloss in 1995, the band played all following shows in the city (97, 98, 00, 01, 02, 08, 10) at the great Schlachthof! The club's inside looks like a post-industrial ampthitheatre: The floor itself in front of the stage holds room for merely five rows of people. From there steps and galleries are rising up to the roof of the giant former boiler-house semi-circling the stage and thus allowing each audience member to focus their undivided attention on the band! Due to this set up the band is practically surrounded by the crowd facing a wall of people which creates an unmatched directness and communication between the audience and the performer. One of the best spots in the room is to be found in front of the soundboard on the second step from the floor. When standing there one faces the band eye-to-eye with the musicians being just a few metres away. Combined with a dedicated fan-base this setting has produced many sublime Motorpsycho concerts at Schlachthof, where the crowd would listen attentively instead of chatting – total indulgence in Motorpsycho's magic guaranteed!
