I'm not into progrockmetalcrap. Tool is probably the only other band I like next to this one. I enjoy their music because there's a strong 70ties rock vibe to it and they know how to write a tune. So I just got back from Frankfurt, where for the first time ever I've seen them live:

that's the intro movie shown before the first set. there was another one for the 2nd set. in the last years they got more and more into comedy. old rockers having the time of their lives. :)

the proper show, check that backline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVAgOfQ2b88

edit: why did i post that other clip? boring boring boring doesn't make them any justice. here's a better one:

Oh damn I missed it. It was 14 years ago on may 17th and 18th when my little band opened for them.

Same writer wrote a great review for LLM. He's not just a praising fan, he really understand what makes this band so worthwhile: http://www.allmusic.com/album/little-lucid-moments-r1346503/review

this quietness at the gig's beginning feels so weird.

Overall high quality writing, performing and singing. Giving Kashmir a run for their money.

But the production… too much compression? It's my taste of course, but bassdrum and snare are too much upfront for my liking. And sound heavily compressed and (in case of snare) flat. Cymbals and hi-hat sound nearly distorted in Tarred and Feathered at 2'30" Don't want to be negative, it's just stuff I'm fighting with myself when mixing. Beware that Multimaximizer software! But the songs are great. Like them.

yeah I might go too. I have never seen them and it's the only metal band I like (I don't consider Tool and Helmet as metal…)

and Boris will play the Rote Fabrik on june 30th.

                    @miss_t

I've been a Zurich based musician for 20 years now, thank you. And there sure are harder places on this planet to get a subculture going than here. Don't get so fired up about words on the internet.

"Crappy town" I wrote because nobody of the clubs books MP, if they even know them. Thanks to the gods of guitarmusic for our "frenchies" beyond the röschtigraben. And for Winterthur. The agency (and a band after 20 working years) probably just deals directly with club managers to maintain a professional level. I fully understand this. This is about money and business. Might be a bad thing for some romantic mindsets among the indie scene.

I could use a breather after that epic guitar solo in Wishing Well, that's why the vocals are a bit too early for me. The cymbals might only get a chorus treatment there. Or a simple vol fader push.

GBD's clip, hell yeah! That's what I love about them. After 20 years you'd thought you've heard it all but they still can push it further.

it's probably too hot down there.

on wishing well, the vocals should have waited for a few bars after the guitar solo.

I must say I really like all of their periods and albums. There was just a phase of "Whip that Best Friend when we go to California" noodling jam extravaganzas ten years ago that sometimes got stretched a bit too lengthy for me. I'd always prefer a 30min "Chien d'Espace" to that.

That said, I just watched the 2002 Amsterdam show, the whole bootlegged gig, not just the RW3 edit, and its dynamics are astonishing. In light and shade, they've probably never been that extreme before and after. Geb's "What if" and "Little Ricky Massenburg", the magical "the Mirror and the Lie" and "Circles" put against the blasting "Hogwash" and "STG" and of course "Close your eyes", this show is some rollercoaster.

RW4's "Wishing Well" I do not regard as noodling, rather as the old ebb and flow game the guys master so nicely. It's absolutely wonderful magical. Noodling to me is endlessly soloing over a basic groove and chord structure. 97's "Nothing to say" live renditions come to mind, THAT was some great soloing over a big track building and building and building. Always like this stuff. Also elaborate things like Starhammer on the HMF album. But not the hippie Free Bird wheedelideedelideeedeeedeeedidelideeees.
