…there was something on DIME…amazing band. hope stickman will distribute it in EU.
the video is nice…the audio not really. Something I stay in tune with the ViKINGS…
all fine with a good audio recording (I got permission) but not with a rather crappy
sounding U-Tube video. Not my world and neither that of the band.
@ eddy_t: Yes, that was the weakest of the triple in 1975/1976. Meurgyls III is still
very fine, but I don't think Banton and SaxonJackson wanted to do "Reggae". So the band
split afterwards into "Peter Hammill's VdG". Still life/Godbluff are really fine albums,
maybe a bit too fast following each others…
AS from the recent past: Yes, of course I miss Mr. Jackson, but I think he doesn't like to
tour that much anymore instead of concentrating on his work with disabled children.
Peter Hammill: Saw him in last May twice in Dortmund. Nice, but helluva exhausting.
Is there a weak album by VdGG? Don't think so. H to He stands out as well as Pawn hearts.
"A plague of lighthouse keepers" is unbelievable. But I also like the later ones as VdG
very much. The live album…the late Nic Potter on fuzzed out bass…Pioneers over C…
Sphinx in the face…all beautiful music.
Hi, thanks for all the nice words about my recording. Would've been impossible without
the permission from the band and venue. About the VdGG thing…Under my MP Hoodie (I
didn't put on a DEAD as usual) I wore a VdGG Godbluff shirt. Figuring out about the
"Stack situation" Reine got me UPSTAIRS to the backstage area. After a few minutes of
"meet and hello" with both Bent and Reine somehow the conversation drifted towards
musical experiences. Me – as a taper – threw in: "Something to avoid a bad recording".
And I made three examples…
a) Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead) – Eugene Oregon 1994-06-19 (or was it the 18th?) –
"The other one" bass roll let the whole stadium shiver…physical experience.
Did youever feel a concrete stadium shaking below you? Maybe at an earthquake.
b) VdGG – 2005-11-05 – Leverkusen, Germany … when Hugh Banton pushed the pedal of
his keyboards…my recording vanished into "wooooooooooshhhhh". Unlistenable.
Even the official release from Rockpalast is marred by that.
c) Do not stand in front of Bent if you want a good recording. At least get your head down
before he steps on the Taurus. Might save your hairs. And other things as well…
So, this is the story behind that VdGG affection.
And do I dare to tell you:
VdGG is my favourite so-called "Progband" ever. Nothing comes close.
And I don't really like that CRIMSON KING(S) too much. A few fine albums in the early 70's
but all others were not impressive to me. Then I'd better head for some Coltrane, Miles,
early Dead or spaced out Kraut (CAN).
soon…takes a bit of time. should be good.
Share with everyone you love/like/trade or whatselse. But DO NOT SELL! –
There might be something up soon on DIME. I strongly recommend NOT downloading that.
It sounds…so crappy…(hahaha). Ok, just a joke/poke/toke?
Probably my "Königs-Aufnahme". Don't think I could do better.
Sorry, I needed some time to "land" from outerspace graced with a monumental show
(none of the first seven songs are below the 10" mark) and the extra encore of 90+ min.
upstairs/downstairs the Forum. Big thanks to the Forum guys as well. Taperfriendly as you
would not imagine. Even got power supply. Woah. Tapers paradise!
Anything to complain? Well…maybe it was a westphalian sauna club towards the end of show.
But all that vanished within a few…miliseconds…
…hell…a WHEEL…I was hoping for that in Bielefeld (my only show of this short tour),
but that was not to be. Anyway…BI was magical and I hope to get my ears on this one as
well…for those who know me…WHEEL…woah!
How funny life could be? For me the answer is: Bielefeld Forum 11/11/2018.
One of those few moments in life when you are completely "in there" for music and more.
Oh well…ok…might be from the Stack recorded…but y'know – just the usual poor quality.
@ jig: no, I don't live in BI, but I got friends there for overnight stay.
Recording equipment is my "new toy": LineAudio CM3 capsule mics on a micophone stack at
max. 2.7 meters into a Zoom H5. Most likely from the soundboard as I hope for power supply.
Those mics eat batteries like a spider flies. I have a new powerbank with me but I don't
know how long that lasts. Y'know MP is 160-180 min. continued performance.
But if they say "no" to that I still have the OKM2R mics -> Zoom H2n.
I will figure out in the afternoon what will go. Forum's usually taperfriendly so it
depends on the ViKINGS. But I got some bribary vinyl with me…hehehe…
@ tomcat: will figure out what my BI hosts are saying. At least 7pm at the venue.
And sorry to say – this is my only show of this "inter-" tour.
CU Psychonauts tomorrow in the city that doesn't exist.
Oh, and btw – it's 100th anniversary of end of 1st WW.
@ Coffin Varnish: You'll get used to it. Every show grows better…
Setlist looks very fine. But I think STG->Lacuna is the right order?
Haven't heard an evidence yet. But Feel-Wheel-Plan is a good combination.
And a HAMSTER as CANopener…well…congrats. Think I never got that and a Wheel in one show!
Oh dear Johnny…I've been to all german concerts of the mighty DEAD back then in 1990.
Except for Frankfurt. A Berlin DARK STAR…well…surealistic.
Anyway, times go on further up the road and I think it's time to leave the RAMPENSAU place
for other younger people. Still I try to do my best.
Tusen takk to Thor Egil. If it works I will not disappoint anyone. Not even my ViKINGS.
Grateful Dead will be forever my fave band, and THEY know WHY.
Something's up on DIME now…sorry for the delay but I had taping duties on my own.
The setlist looks very very fine. Will have a listen soon.
STG back! And a back-to-back of my beloved Starhamster with Plan#1.
Na, c'mon, dear Lizard, why should they do already any new material which is just in the
progress? Don't be "ungeduldig" (as we say here in Tyskland). All will come to it's time.
Meanwhile…I'm still enjoying one of the best "Wheel" ever from Burg Herzberg.
That one even dropped my jaw on that hot summer night.
Now let's go for BIELEFELD!
I hope there will be more than just that one song…I remember they filmed the first
half of the show…
As well on DIME. Feel free to spread and/or put it on Motortrades.
Fine sound, great show…but way too short…
