After a couple of spins, I have to say that I don't like the album. Out of context, it is a solid hardrock/psych/prog album, but in the context of MP being the best band in the world and in the context of the explorations of the last 10 years I find it rather boring to be honest. The production is technically brilliant and transparent, but it lacks balls and grit. As much as I cherish the steam train attitude of releasing one album after another after 30 years of being a band, I hope that they take a little more time for the next one and come up with something fresh and inspired.
"Motorpsycho whistle again on predictable song structures" :lol:
Thanks, so they have 2 to 4 songs left from the recording sessions. EP/single?
Punj! Great find, thanks!
A couple of days ago, there was a post on Facebook with some Playlist curated by Bent including songs he listens to in order to get in gear in the morning. It included some Beatles, Curtis Mayfield's "Move on up" and some other tunes. I don't find it anymore and I don't remember which online zine it was. Anyone caught it?
Apparently, they were having lots of fun in the studio, judging by that ridiculous gong and the extensive cowbell action
Definitely a solid song and they further refined that whole hard/prog rock thing. It is a catchy groovy riff, but there was plenty of similar Sabbath-riffing recently. So, refinement? Definitely! Progress? Well…
I certainly love me some Snah solo – that unique quality of pushing the climax of a song even further and squeezing maximum intensity out of it. The first solo though is pretty sloppy and lacking that character, in my opinion. Three minutes into the song it is getting much more interesting. As mentioned before, the dueling guitar solo is really great and it is cool how they don't care and let the song go nuts and take its turns.
So, one song left to discover. Excited how this one will turn out, esp. the Horntveth contribution.
@Kid A
I also have that one, and it is absolutely brilliant. Really cool, how they bring back the coolness to jazz. You know, somehow managing to avoid that often tedious approach of fusion jazz and still make it accessible for listeners who didn't care so much for jazz so far. I didn't listen to the new album, though.
I would like to mention the Soundtrack to "L.A.Noire", which struck me in a similar way. It is really amazing lounge jazz/orchestral work….absolutely on a par with with famous movie soundtracks, but probybly for the reason of it being "videogame" music it apparently remained unrecognized. If there was a vinyl version, I'd definitely buy it.
Lim. Edition now also gone on Stickman
Happy holidays everyone! Just wanted to express my ultimately belated gratitude for "The Afterglow". I never really appreciated "Stillife with Eggplant", and I still don't, BUT mentioned song really is a wonderfully crafted gem, being horribly placed after the train wreck that is "Ratcatcher". It certainly is not the band at their furthest out, but after giving it a spin… Well, after a rather timid start, that really is some incredibly well-crafted build-up of a song. All kinds of harmonic twists, that magic yearning undertone, an incredible solo from Snah…. all that naturally clocking in below 6 minutes…simply wonderful! Would have also nicely fitted onto "It's a Love Cult" or the second half of "BH/BC". That is basically it. Thank you :MPD:

Someone was lucky! Picture of the artwork…might be promo packaging, who knows!

Interesting, I just checked the VERA/Groningen website and they don't promote it as "The Crucible"-Tour, but under the "30th anniversary"-moniker. Maybe some focus on Trust Us or Best Of-ish setlists to be expected!
@Punj Yes, thanks a bunch!
I was so lucky to see The Wheel twice. First time, at Oya 2006. As Devotional mentioned, it was rather disappointing. Mainly, due to the fact that the sound was pretty weak… as was Jaco's drumming :roll: (Solid, but lacking that necessary dynamics/punch). Plus it was bright daylight, people were cheering and for whatever other reason, it simply didn't work – at least how I imagined the song to be live. However, I got over it and this year's Dresden show 100% made up for it. Although I found the show a bit difficult, they absolutely nailed that song!!! What a brutal, beautiful beast.
Just googled “The Crucible“. Apparently there is a theatre play by Arthur Miller, followed by a film adaptation. The overall topic being witch hunts in Northern America and related social discord and chaos. So, as announced in the press text, a continuation of The Tower lyrically.
3 Songs, wow! Quite a twist to my expectations :lol: Lux probably being the 8 minute-song then. So, maybe a "short" suite and two more conventional songs…getting a bit of a "more concice LLM" feel now.
